For the adults, we would love to share our enthusiasm for camping, review some of our favourite camping gear, share recipes & menus, tips & how-to's, & anything else you may want to know about camping. Got a question about camping? Email us so we can help you & anyone else who may be wondering the same thing. We are real people, with a brutally honest bent. Super Good Camping Podcast
Canoehound DOESN'T CARRY BEAR SPRAY!
Title totally for the algorithm.
We had a great catch-up chat with one of our favourite adventure pals. We talked about his summer tripping adventures, paddling with munchkins, bears on site, his daughter's wedding, what the Canoehound Outdoor adventure show will look like this year & might have mentioned bear spray.

00:26 - 00:28
Yay. How you doing, guys? Long time no see.
00:28 - 00:29
Great. How are you?
00:29 - 00:34
It's Oh, I've been Yeah. Bill 1. Yeah. What have you
00:34 - 00:34
been up to?
00:34 - 00:35
Pardon me?
00:35 - 00:36
What have you been
00:36 - 00:38
up to? What have I been up to? Oh my gosh.
00:38 - 00:42
Are Not just me, but my whole family.
00:42 - 00:44
The the summer has been a real whirlwind of activity.
00:46 - 00:51
July August September here and leading into October, it's we've been busy.
00:51 - 00:56
It's, every weekend has been booked with one thing or another, whether it's family or pleasure
00:56 - 00:58
things or whatever it might be.
00:58 - 01:05
But, yeah, it's been probably the most busy summer that I've experienced in my entire life.
01:05 - 01:08
And it's showing no signs of settling right now.
01:08 - 01:14
It's a daughter's wedding in 2 weeks from recording date here. And, yeah.
01:16 - 01:18
There's a reason for all the gray hair.
01:20 - 01:22
I know that one, man.
01:22 - 01:23
Yes. Yes.
01:24 - 01:26
Cool. So 2 weeks well, great.
01:26 - 01:30
So this will air right around the same time then with with the people will be listening to this
01:30 - 01:34
right when your daughter got married. There you go. Which is cool.
01:34 - 01:39
And you just celebrated a birthday, a week a week before recording this.
01:39 - 01:43
Yeah. Yeah. Good. I celebrated my 60th trip around the sun.
01:44 - 01:51
Don't know if I feel 60, but, yeah, I do. Some days. Some days. But, no, it's, yeah.
01:51 - 01:53
I had a quiet birthday with the family.
01:54 - 01:57
They they took me out for, for dinner.
01:57 - 02:01
I had I had a choice between, you know, a fancy steakhouse, like, you know, something like the
02:01 - 02:07
keg or something like that, or a local hunt restaurant, in Niagara Falls called the Flying Saucer.
02:07 - 02:10
Not sure if you're familiar with it or any of your listeners are.
02:10 - 02:16
But it's a restaurant that's shaped like a flying saucer, and they got killer food at killer prices.
02:16 - 02:21
And the grandkids love it, and I chose that because then my grandkids could be there as well.
02:21 - 02:25
So, yeah, it was a it was a nice quiet day, but it was a fun day.
02:25 - 02:27
How old are the grandkids now?
02:27 - 02:31
Oh, Flynn just turned 2 on September 5th.
02:32 - 02:34
So he's about a week and a half before my birthday.
02:35 - 02:42
And Oliver turns 4 years old on November 5th. So or November 1st. Sorry. So, yeah, man.
02:42 - 02:45
They're, they just finished leaving the house, like, 10 minutes ago.
02:45 - 02:54
We we babysat because the the youngest daughter and her husband celebrated their their 5th anniversary. And, yeah.
02:54 - 03:00
It's, we took the kids and had a little camp out in our camper in the driveway and, made the best of it. Yeah.
03:00 - 03:02
Canoe hound, grandpa, family guy.
03:05 - 03:06
Nice. Nice. Well, that that's cool.
03:06 - 03:13
That's, I I remember as a as a shorter person, we had we had neighbors that had had a a Bon
03:13 - 03:16
Air, like a pop up trailer, and they kept it in their their driveway.
03:16 - 03:22
And we would go over and and play in there or do sleepovers and stuff. It was good fun. We really enjoyed it.
03:22 - 03:22
Oh, yeah. You know what?
03:22 - 03:23
You got the you got the box.
03:23 - 03:25
You might as well use it. Right?
03:25 - 03:28
Yeah. And so did you get them out paddling this summer?
03:29 - 03:36
Actually, yes. Well, my my, my oldest grandson, Oliver, I I took him and his, my son-in-law, Max.
03:36 - 03:39
We we went out to, QE 2.
03:39 - 03:49
It was a nice long weekend trip, and, we got to experience all kinds of stuff like a a bearing camp. Yeah. We got to swim.
03:49 - 03:52
He got Oliver got the paddle in the canoe for the first time.
03:52 - 03:55
He sat on a pack in the middle, and I got a shorter paddle.
03:55 - 03:58
And he's, like, just trying to give her as we're going along.
03:58 - 04:03
And it was I was a little reluctant there, you know, at first, like, you know, is this kid gonna
04:03 - 04:04
tip our canoe or something?
04:04 - 04:06
And, no, he was fantastic, man.
04:06 - 04:12
He sat in the middle like, like a good little man and helped to paddle, and he he enjoyed it.
04:12 - 04:15
And he keeps asking me, when are you taking me on caucasian again?
04:15 - 04:18
He calls it caucasian instead of canoeing. Right?
04:19 - 04:28
And, it's gonna happen again, but, yeah, he, he caught his first fish all by himself, like, legitimately all by himself. He hooked it. He reeled it in.
04:28 - 04:37
The son-in-law just helped him get it in, take the hook out, but, it was like a 2 pound, largemouth bass. Nice. Very first fish. Yeah. Yeah. Beautiful.
04:38 - 04:43
And and and then just to show it wasn't an accident, he did it again, like, less than 5 minutes later.
04:44 - 04:45
Showing up grandpa.
04:46 - 04:48
Oh, yeah. He did. He did indeed. Yep.
04:49 - 04:51
So that that was a really cool experience.
04:51 - 04:53
And you had a bearing camp, you said?
04:54 - 04:57
Yeah. Yeah. We, it was our our first night.
04:57 - 05:00
You've been to QE too, have you not, Tim? Yep. Yeah.
05:00 - 05:11
Well, we we went in through Headlake and we we paddled across Head Lake, and we just got up onto what Fishhog? Fish yeah. Up to Fishhog Lake.
05:12 - 05:16
And from the last couple of times I'd been there, the place was busy.
05:16 - 05:18
We had a hard time finding a campsite.
05:18 - 05:23
We ended up with a campsite over by where the portage is that goes up to the next lake up.
05:23 - 05:28
There's like a little little bit of moving water and there's a nice point campsite there.
05:28 - 05:33
Turned out to be a beautiful campsite, but as we're, we turned in early because we had driven
05:33 - 05:37
through the night to get there. And, Oliver was tired.
05:37 - 05:38
So we we we turned in.
05:38 - 05:39
I was in my hammock.
05:39 - 05:45
The, the boys were in a tent along with, Molly, the dog.
05:45 - 05:49
And, Max had to get up to get, some of Oliver's medication.
05:49 - 05:56
So he he went walked down the trail to where we had the, the food barrel stashed, and Molly followed them.
05:56 - 06:00
And when they were coming back, Molly stopped, and she's right beside my hammock, and she's
06:00 - 06:03
like, and I go, oh, there's something back there.
06:03 - 06:05
Probably a moose or a deer. Right?
06:06 - 06:08
And, they turned back in.
06:08 - 06:12
Molly went back into the tent with them, and not 5, 10 minutes later, this boat comes up to
06:12 - 06:19
our campsite, and it was people camped across on the island that, had had boated over, and they
06:19 - 06:25
seen this bear frolicking around just outside of our camp and getting closer and closer in. Right?
06:25 - 06:30
So they come up with the motor bone. Hey, up on shore. Anybody there? We go, yeah. What's going on?
06:30 - 06:33
Just thought you might like to know you got a bear in your camp. Right?
06:33 - 06:37
And this is not long after after having the the bear episode. Episode.
06:37 - 06:39
I knew I was outdoor adventure show. Right? Right.
06:39 - 06:40
I was like, I got this.
06:41 - 06:44
I got this kid all make a lot of noise and stuff.
06:44 - 06:50
But, yeah, sure enough, they there was a a family with, 3 young young children.
06:51 - 06:52
They were gone the next day.
06:52 - 06:58
I think, I think that it might have frightened the, the wife having small kids and this bear just wandering around.
06:59 - 07:05
But we, I think we made enough ruckus and probably their boat made enough ruckus that the bear had taken off.
07:05 - 07:09
I didn't actually see the bear, but they pointed out. They said, no.
07:09 - 07:12
It's like, you can't see it, but we could see it right there behind that bush. Right?
07:12 - 07:16
And it's like and then the bear took off, and that was that. He didn't come back.
07:16 - 07:20
I stayed up watch guard over the the food barrel and stuff because we didn't hang.
07:20 - 07:23
There was no place to hang there in, at this campsite.
07:24 - 07:29
And I just had the barrel placed well away from camp and, like but within eye shot type of thing.
07:29 - 07:31
And I kept an eye. It didn't come back.
07:31 - 07:33
Been night calm, and I said, okay.
07:33 - 07:34
I'm going back to bed now.
07:35 - 07:37
So, yeah, we're all safe. We're alive. Yep. That's
07:38 - 07:44
that's a good thing. Do you do you take, like, bear spray with you when you're backcountry all
07:44 - 07:46
the time, some of the time, never?
07:46 - 07:53
I I've never owned a can of bear spray, but the more and more encounters that we see because
07:53 - 07:56
that that's the second bear encounter.
07:56 - 08:00
Like, the first bear encounter was in the spring, and it wasn't an encounter.
08:00 - 08:05
It was more of a sighting close sighting sighting. But, you know what? They're out there.
08:05 - 08:10
I I think it'd be good to have one, but I can tell you honestly, I don't know if I would carry
08:10 - 08:11
it constantly on my belt.
08:12 - 08:13
You know, like you see some people do.
08:13 - 08:18
It, you know, I I know I would take it off, set it down, I guess, if as long as it's within
08:18 - 08:22
running distance or but don't run around a bear.
08:22 - 08:28
I every experience I've ever had with a black bear, a lot of noise, and they're gone.
08:28 - 08:29
Yep.
08:29 - 08:29
You know what
08:29 - 08:30
I mean?
08:31 - 08:35
You know? But then you get the Chris Prouse experiences where you bang all the pots together
08:35 - 08:38
that you want, and this bear, if he wants the food.
08:38 - 08:46
And I I've always been people talk about the hang and don't hang and stuff like that. Take my food. Take it. Take the barrel.
08:46 - 08:47
Go away with it, man.
08:47 - 08:55
That's my belief is, if you take it, you get away with it, then I'm not gonna have to worry
08:55 - 08:57
about you and my camp and warding you off.
08:58 - 09:02
So that's that's my opinion. Everybody's different.
09:02 - 09:03
Yeah. No. I don't disagree.
09:03 - 09:12
I mean, I would be I would probably do have a similar philosophy in in the sense that I can paddle out.
09:12 - 09:16
I can go get more food if I have to and come back if need be, whatever.
09:16 - 09:19
Like, depending depending how many days you're in, like, how far in you you you've gone.
09:19 - 09:32
But, yeah, it's I I remember watching the the the Chris Price video and going holy crap. Well, yep. I give. It's yours. See you later. Yep. Bye bye.
09:32 - 09:37
Yep. Yep. Yeah. If he wants it, he wants it, you know, and I'd rather, you know, if you hang
09:37 - 09:43
or you hang too close to to camp, I'd rather that, the bear was not trying to figure out how to get it.
09:43 - 09:44
You know what I mean?
09:44 - 09:46
Just take it and go.
09:47 - 09:50
I always thought of leaving out a sacrificial bag of food for him too. Right? But
09:51 - 09:55
That's true. Yep. Yep. Interesting. Okay. Cool.
09:55 - 09:57
So you went to QE 2.
09:57 - 10:00
Did you manage to get any other trips in this year?
10:00 - 10:04
You know what? I think, 4 times, 4 outings.
10:04 - 10:07
We did our my buddy and I just did a a spring.
10:08 - 10:13
Well, everybody calls it ice out, but our early spring trip, we went to Nogginosh and we did
10:13 - 10:19
like a 4 day weekend, but went the deepest in the Nogginosh area that we've ever been into.
10:19 - 10:27
We went into the sort of north no. South Southwest Southeast.
10:27 - 10:34
Southeast in there over to Mud Lake and found a fantastic little campsite there.
10:34 - 10:35
A really nice area down there.
10:35 - 10:36
I've never paddled down there.
10:36 - 10:42
I've been to Nogginosh, you know, ten times in the last 6, 7 years.
10:43 - 10:46
And never never gone to this particular area.
10:46 - 10:49
It was well worth the extra paddle, you know.
10:49 - 10:51
And for the first time, we put in at the S's.
10:51 - 10:53
We usually put in at Fleming's Landing.
10:54 - 11:00
So that was kinda it was a it was a totally different canoe trip for us, you know, or outing.
11:00 - 11:04
I'll call that an outing because there's only a shorty and I've been there many times.
11:04 - 11:05
What else did we do?
11:05 - 11:10
Of course, I go to Wickstead every single year, Lake Wickstead, and I went up there with a few
11:10 - 11:17
buddies, and we just, instead of boat camping, we actually paddled in and and we're wind bound
11:17 - 11:21
all all 3 days that we were there. So that was crazy.
11:21 - 11:23
Well, back to the Nogginash one though.
11:23 - 11:30
We, actually had I've been having problems on canoe trips, where I haven't been seeing any wildlife whatsoever.
11:30 - 11:36
Like, you know, small stuff, yeah, but never bears or moose or anything like that.
11:36 - 11:43
On this trip, we've seen, on 2 different occasions, we've seen 2 wolves on the way in, paddling in.
11:44 - 11:52
We've seen, on a day side trip, we've seen a big white tailed deer right at the at the edge of the shore.
11:52 - 11:59
And while we were all fishing one day, we sat and watched a black, black bear for a good half
11:59 - 12:03
hour before he noticed us, and he was like sort of digging like a little spot to lay down and
12:03 - 12:05
just sort of frolicking around.
12:05 - 12:09
And then I made a sound with my paddle in the water and his head popped up.
12:10 - 12:14
He took a few steps and stopped and checked us out again, and then he disappeared into the bush.
12:14 - 12:20
So that was probably the most wildlife we'd seen in quite a while on a, canoe trip.
12:20 - 12:22
Otters, beavers, you know, it was it was pretty cool.
12:22 - 12:25
And but I attribute that because it was early spring. Right? So
12:26 - 12:30
Yeah. That makes sense. For me me personally, I I I I'm pretty sure it's Thomas.
12:30 - 12:34
Thomas is a magnet for, like, moose, deers.
12:35 - 12:42
What did we either wolves or coyotes, I'm not sure which, when we were in when we were in q e 2. Bald eagles.
12:42 - 12:45
Like, it's if I don't take him with me, I don't see anything.
12:45 - 12:48
I see I see squirrels and chipmunks. That's it.
12:49 - 12:56
Hardly seen any of them this year, but, yeah, eagles are isn't it great, the resurgence the eagles have made? Yeah. It's fabulous.
12:56 - 12:58
They're they're actually down here in Southern Ontario now.
12:58 - 13:00
Like, a lot of them down here in Niagara.
13:00 - 13:06
I I've seen, you know, within the last 2 weeks, I've probably seen 2 of them flying around in different areas, right?
13:06 - 13:12
So they're, I think, starting to nest on the escarpment here in Niagara and stuff. But it's great
13:12 - 13:12
to see.
13:12 - 13:12
Yeah, we
13:12 - 13:17
had, we had one here in, a pair here in Toronto that were, that were nesting, had, had eggs.
13:17 - 13:21
I was like, holy crap. That's awesome. Yeah. Yeah.
13:21 - 13:24
It's way better than the cormorants because they're that's massive.
13:24 - 13:26
Those things are messy. Yeah.
13:26 - 13:34
And then and then our our biggest trip, well, we just did about 3 weeks ago from at a time here.
13:34 - 13:39
My buddy Jay and I, who's been my regular canoe partner for the last 30 some odd years,
13:41 - 13:45
we were gonna do a route that was in Kevin Callan's book, up up in Algoma.
13:45 - 13:50
And until we found out and it was right around the time that that Kevin and Andy were going
13:50 - 13:55
to do this big epic, revenge, trip for Andy.
13:55 - 14:01
And I reached out to Kevin about it there just to get a bit of info because every, everything
14:01 - 14:03
in his book says it's fly in.
14:03 - 14:08
Then we found out we could drive him, but we also found out that all the lakes there are our trout lakes.
14:08 - 14:10
And he says, you won't catch anything but trout in there.
14:10 - 14:13
You're gonna have to fish deep and you know, it's a tough trip.
14:13 - 14:18
So we decided to because we're gonna go to that area, we decided to do another trip.
14:18 - 14:23
We did Rocky Island Lake and a little bit of the, Mississauga River.
14:24 - 14:26
And it was a 0 portage trip, Tim.
14:26 - 14:28
You would have loved it. 0 portage.
14:29 - 14:37
We we had been on this lake, about 3 or 4 years ago as part of our Aubrey Lake Winnebagoong River loop.
14:37 - 14:41
And we said, we gotta come back to this lake because it's so big and beautiful, and, you know,
14:41 - 14:43
you really gotta check it out.
14:43 - 14:43
And that's what we did.
14:43 - 14:46
So we we drove right into the lake, and I'm talking.
14:46 - 14:54
I got new pinstripes on my truck now, from the alder bushes and stuff like that. 10, 11, 12
14:54 - 14:59
degree climbs up, you know, loose gravel and rocks.
14:59 - 15:03
And we get halfway in, and there's this a trailer park community.
15:04 - 15:07
Like, Pishu Lake, I think it's called.
15:07 - 15:11
So we stopped, we talked to this one guy and said, how do you get those campers in here?
15:11 - 15:13
And the guy says, load slow, man.
15:13 - 15:15
He says, you can't rush in here.
15:15 - 15:17
And I I I couldn't figure out how they would have got them in.
15:18 - 15:23
But it took us, an hour and 10 minutes to drive 13 kilometers.
15:23 - 15:24
Holy mackerel.
15:24 - 15:27
Yeah. It was like bum bum bum bum, right?
15:27 - 15:33
We got in, we put in, and we camped at 2 of the campsites we camped at last time around Rocky
15:33 - 15:36
Island, but it was really cool because we got to explore this lake.
15:36 - 15:43
It's a huge lake with with arms and bays and, you know, all kinds of islands and stuff like that.
15:43 - 15:45
And it was a it was a fantastic trip.
15:45 - 15:52
We we had a couple of bad windy days there as well, but in the in the end, we we had some really
15:52 - 15:55
good fish and caught some great walleye bass. Oh my gosh.
15:55 - 16:00
We were catching £5.6 smallmouth bass, like, almost walleye.
16:00 - 16:06
Not every cast because that's exaggerating, but quite frequently. Jake Jake got us.
16:06 - 16:07
Oh, it looked like a football, man.
16:07 - 16:14
It was a great big tank of a of a bass, and it had to be a 6 pounder easily. So yeah. That's what we like.
16:14 - 16:19
Sweet. That's nice. Well, that's good that's good that you got out because I I know I can't remember.
16:19 - 16:24
I've fallen following something you were saying on Facebook, and it and it looked like there
16:24 - 16:28
was gonna be like, the back end of the summer is just gonna be a write off for you.
16:28 - 16:31
Didn't didn't look like you were gonna be out. So, yay. Yeah. That's that's cool.
16:32 - 16:36
You know what? In in all reality, when Jay and I plan our trip, it's always, like, either the
16:36 - 16:41
2nd or 3rd week of of August, and it's it's all in my calendar already for next year.
16:41 - 16:47
It's, it's it's never a question. It's always a given. That's our trip.
16:47 - 16:51
And last year, it was our Wabakini trip. Right? Right.
16:51 - 16:58
But, it it's always it's in the calendar, and other people find out about it, like, you know, our regular canoe friends.
16:58 - 17:00
And, if they wanna join, they join.
17:00 - 17:02
And this year, nobody else can make it.
17:02 - 17:04
So it was just Jay and I.
17:04 - 17:08
And sometimes that makes it a lot easier when there's just 2 of you because we're on the same
17:09 - 17:10
right on the same page.
17:10 - 17:11
We've been doing this for so long.
17:11 - 17:13
It makes it all so easy.
17:13 - 17:20
Yeah. I I since Thomas and I have been tripping together for so long now that we like, it doesn't
17:20 - 17:22
we don't even have to talk anymore.
17:22 - 17:23
You just just you do that. I do this.
17:23 - 17:25
We're we're going this way.
17:25 - 17:29
We he you know, we know each other's paddling styles.
17:29 - 17:32
So we adjust for I've tried to paddle on my own.
17:32 - 17:38
I I suck way more at it than I would have expected just because of the strength of having somebody
17:38 - 17:44
who knows exactly how it's gonna play out, and they paddle the way that they need to to compensate for whatever. So
17:45 - 17:47
Yeah. Well, you know what? There's a connection.
17:47 - 17:49
That that's why we have regular canoe partners. Right?
17:50 - 17:55
Like, you you've got Thomas, you know, or you Kevin Callow's got Andy. You know?
17:55 - 17:59
I I got my buddy Jay and now Ingo as well. You're familiar with Ingo.
17:59 - 17:59
Yep.
17:59 - 18:02
But, you know what? You you get a canoe partner.
18:02 - 18:08
And when you get to camp, there's no there's no, okay, who's gonna do this, that, or the other thing. It's everything gets done.
18:09 - 18:09
You know what I mean?
18:10 - 18:15
You go, you you find your spot for your tents, you get your camp set up, go get wood together,
18:15 - 18:18
you come back, okay, let's cook supper. What do you want? What do you want?
18:18 - 18:22
You know, or, you know, if it's freeze dried, have whatever you want.
18:22 - 18:27
And then you're sitting down for a campfire, at the end of the evening and every everything's
18:27 - 18:32
done, you know, dishes are done, you know, there's no, no, no guesswork to it.
18:32 - 18:36
You just, a fine oiled machine is what it equates to, So
18:37 - 18:44
Yeah. Well, I'm I'm gonna lose my fine oiled machine because he's 22, has a job, has a girlfriend.
18:45 - 18:47
He's been a 22 year old.
18:47 - 18:52
So I'm trying to I'm trying to get I'm trying to get a new well oiled machine going here.
18:52 - 18:54
Yeah. And to cultivate somebody else.
18:55 - 19:00
There you go. I gotta watch my words. You know what?
19:00 - 19:02
Your your flying oil machine will come back to you. Trust me.
19:02 - 19:07
If he if he enjoys the outings with dad, it'll it'll come back. Definitely.
19:07 - 19:13
Yeah. I I I I'm sort of joking. It's what it became.
19:13 - 19:16
So this summer, we did the we did, 7 days in Killarney.
19:16 - 19:26
We had another 7 night another 7 night trip, scheduled in early August around Bear Baren Canyon in Algonquin.
19:26 - 19:29
And we that went out the window.
19:29 - 19:32
Just couldn't couldn't make it work with his work schedule.
19:32 - 19:34
Tried to reschedule it for the middle of September.
19:35 - 19:36
That went out the window.
19:36 - 19:41
So now it's it's 3 nights in the Massassauga with, the young lady. Now he's settling.
19:41 - 19:45
There you go. Pamela, talk to my wife.
19:45 - 19:47
Get her to go camping with me. Cool. Cool.
19:47 - 19:49
I can do that. I'll work on her.
19:50 - 19:52
No. And and here's a message to Thomas.
19:52 - 19:59
Thomas, every trip you miss with your dad is a trip you'll never get back with your dad. So yes. Yes.
19:59 - 20:00
Good one. I like that.
20:01 - 20:08
So other things, what's, what does the Canoe hound Outdoor Adventure Show hold for the future?
20:09 - 20:10
Oh, jeez. You know what?
20:10 - 20:18
I I've my my Facebook message book and emails have been, have been lighting up about that lately.
20:20 - 20:23
This season this season well, just like last season.
20:23 - 20:24
I'll start with last season.
20:24 - 20:27
Last season was kind of a juggling game.
20:27 - 20:33
It was up in the air whether I was going to have a season 5 just because when we first started
20:33 - 20:37
Canoe House Outdoor Adventure Show was during the pandemic. Right?
20:37 - 20:41
So Dennis had all kinds of time to, you know, what else are you doing?
20:41 - 20:44
You're you're confined to the house, right, according to the government.
20:46 - 20:54
When it come time for, like like last season, and you would know this yourself, it's trying
20:54 - 21:00
trying to be your own booking agent and, you know, your own producer and getting everything together.
21:02 - 21:05
I'm also a business owner and a family dude. Right?
21:05 - 21:11
So, there there's there's so many things that are pulling Dennis at different directions. Right?
21:12 - 21:22
That, last season was really, really tough, and it was, I I had hoped to have a lot more episodes out than I did.
21:22 - 21:24
And a lot of the times, I had to say, you know what?
21:24 - 21:25
There's no show this week.
21:25 - 21:33
Just because I did not either have time to find a guest or or for a couple times I was pretty sick.
21:33 - 21:41
I remember, in December of last year, I was down for about a month with some long thing going on. Right?
21:41 - 21:43
But neither here nor there.
21:43 - 21:44
It's a you you know the commitment that it takes.
21:44 - 21:49
And anybody who who brings on guests onto their show realizes this.
21:49 - 21:56
You look at Paddling Adventures Radio and other popular podcasts, they used to have guests on all the time.
21:56 - 22:01
And now they've they've I think they've kinda switched over a bit to reporting about news and
22:01 - 22:02
events and stuff like that.
22:02 - 22:05
And they they they still do a fantastic job.
22:05 - 22:07
I love that podcast as well.
22:07 - 22:12
But, it's hard it's hard to drum up guests, and it really is, and and topics.
22:12 - 22:14
And I don't know if you've noticed this, Tim.
22:15 - 22:19
You're you're you're a lot of your guests are YouTube based as well.
22:19 - 22:24
Have you noticed there's not as much YouTube content out there? Did you find that?
22:24 - 22:25
Yep. Yep.
22:25 - 22:32
For sure. The popular ones, you know, feel bad for guys like Joe Robinette, who's, off with
22:32 - 22:35
injury right now and, you know, feeling pretty rough.
22:35 - 22:38
I hope, you have a speedier recovery recovery there, Joe.
22:38 - 22:44
But, you know, that that there is missing now from the arsenal and and a lot of others that
22:44 - 22:46
just sort of quietly drift off.
22:46 - 22:51
And all of a sudden, you're not getting notifications from and it makes it more difficult to
22:52 - 22:55
that makes it more difficult to to drum up guests.
22:55 - 23:01
So long story short, I know I'm rambling on, but, season 6, a lot of people are asking me what's
23:01 - 23:02
going on for this season.
23:03 - 23:08
And I kinda mentioned it at, I think at the closeout, show of last season when Kevin Cowan was
23:08 - 23:15
on and stuff that, this season, if, if it was a goal, will be a little bit different where we're
23:15 - 23:17
going to it's gonna be sporadic.
23:17 - 23:22
There's no way I can maintain a regular Tuesday evening, schedule.
23:24 - 23:28
Theoretically, here we are toward, like, you know, gearing towards the end of September, and
23:28 - 23:31
I should already have had an episode or 2.
23:32 - 23:36
But just with so much going on, daughter's wedding, yada yada yada, I know excuses excuses,
23:37 - 23:40
but there just hasn't been enough time for me to put something together.
23:40 - 23:42
I've been talking with, Kevin Callan.
23:42 - 23:47
I wanna get him on the show, him and Andy, so we could have a great chat about, his thing.
23:47 - 23:50
But there again, it's just been the preparation time.
23:50 - 23:53
Really busy with work and all these things.
23:53 - 23:55
So is there gonna be a season 6?
23:55 - 24:02
There's gonna be a part there's going to be a season 6, but it's going to be a lot more sporadic, a lot more sporadic.
24:02 - 24:08
And I hope my my viewers can realize that and accept that and just take it for what it is.
24:08 - 24:12
But, I love doing it, and I wish I had more time to do it.
24:13 - 24:14
Yeah. No. I hear you.
24:14 - 24:20
It's keeping especially especially to keep that exacting schedule.
24:21 - 24:25
So you're doing it, you know, every Monday at 7 o'clock.
24:25 - 24:29
Like, that's that's a tough one, man. Life happens. Right?
24:29 - 24:35
And and scheduling guests, finding them, coming up with all those topics, and then and then
24:35 - 24:40
scheduling around people that are, like, busy is part of their deal.
24:40 - 24:42
Like, that's they're out doing things all the time.
24:42 - 24:49
So it's like, oh, but I'm not available on Mondays or or what have you. Life, man. Life happens. Yep.
24:49 - 24:53
We're, you know, we're trying to stick to publishing on Mondays.
24:53 - 24:56
We've we've done one for for season 2 so far.
24:56 - 25:01
I'm pretty sure if I get my editing done today, we'll have 2 for season 2. You know, it's, it's
25:01 - 25:03
It's gonna depend a lot on football.
25:03 - 25:05
Yes. There you go. Alright.
25:05 - 25:07
On first with Sunday. Yeah.
25:07 - 25:12
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yeah. It does for me too because I'm a CFL and an NFL fan. Right?
25:12 - 25:15
So I'm following both right now. But yeah. Yeah. You know what?
25:15 - 25:16
That that that's the best thing.
25:16 - 25:20
Like, we we've and I'll even speak for you on this.
25:20 - 25:26
We've had some fantastic guests on the show, some great conversations, some great topics of
25:26 - 25:31
discussion, and that's the best part of doing what we're doing here is, you know, enjoying and
25:31 - 25:33
learning from what we're doing. Right?
25:33 - 25:39
And to me, I don't wanna lose that, that learning experience, that bonding experience with people
25:39 - 25:44
that we admire watching on YouTube or a story that you heard or like you know in some cases
25:44 - 25:52
having past guests from alone on or you know the Les Strouds, the Jim Beards, you know, it all
25:52 - 25:56
accumulates into a great experience for just an average Joe.
25:57 - 26:00
Tim, I'm you, you know, you're Kevin.
26:00 - 26:06
We're we're all just average Joe's that, this is something that we enjoy doing and I I really
26:06 - 26:07
don't wanna give it up as a hobby.
26:07 - 26:10
My wife says, you got this big beautiful suite.
26:11 - 26:14
I'm pointing at, like, my my video screens and a microphone and everything.
26:15 - 26:16
She says, you got this.
26:16 - 26:17
What are you gonna do if you stop doing the show?
26:17 - 26:20
I go, I'm not gonna stop doing it completely.
26:20 - 26:21
Like, I got all this investment.
26:21 - 26:27
Like, you know, I got a few $1,000 invested in sitting right here in front of me just to to
26:27 - 26:32
specifically to do this and to bring the show to people and to enjoy what I'm doing.
26:33 - 26:38
So, yeah, I don't wanna blow the dust off like I kinda did before I come up with you here.
26:41 - 26:45
When, I know you presented at some of the outdoor adventure shows previously.
26:45 - 26:47
Are any plans to do that this year?
26:48 - 26:55
There again, that's that's things I I've heard, have changed for the main show that I present
26:55 - 26:57
at being the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show.
26:57 - 27:03
I believe they've gotten rid of that stage that, we present that, you know, that all the YouTubers
27:03 - 27:05
type of thing present that.
27:05 - 27:07
I think they're moving it into a room.
27:08 - 27:09
So I I don't know.
27:09 - 27:13
I haven't really had much conversation from the promoters of the show.
27:13 - 27:19
If I did, I'd have to come up with some sort of presentation because right now, off the top
27:19 - 27:24
of my head, I have nothing unless I talk about, the Algoma region, which is absolutely beautiful.
27:25 - 27:31
So, yeah, I no immediate plans, but if they come calling, I'd I'd probably be more than happy to.
27:31 - 27:33
I love going to that show. So
27:34 - 27:41
yeah. Cool. And there's well, there's one that's a a new one this year, the Hamilton Adventure Expo.
27:41 - 27:46
So that's closer to home for you, and that's in I think that's the end of end of January 20
27:47 - 27:49
22nd, 23rd, something like that.
27:49 - 27:50
It's I think it's only a one day show.
27:50 - 27:52
I don't think it's a weekend.
27:52 - 27:57
That might be an interesting one because it seems a little more focused on the outdoor adventure
27:57 - 28:02
types as opposed to, you know, scuba diving in in Bahamas or or whatever. Mhmm.
28:02 - 28:07
Yeah. I, I've only had really quick conversation with, the promoters of that there.
28:07 - 28:13
They just kinda reached out on Instagram and stuff, and they they've already got all their presenters
28:13 - 28:15
and everything, I guess, set up for that.
28:15 - 28:21
I think they got, like, Kareena's gonna be there from Alexis Outdoors, Adam Schultz, and and
28:22 - 28:24
a handful of other, I think, Tory Barrett, I believe.
28:24 - 28:27
Tory's yeah. Yeah. I saw her name on the list.
28:27 - 28:30
Yeah. So they're they I think they've already got their speaking roster set up because it's
28:30 - 28:35
a one day show, but I know the guys, my good friends and kid products are gonna be there.
28:35 - 28:39
And when they go to a show, Dennis likes to go to the show with them and hang out with them
28:39 - 28:43
and, you know, promote their their Twix. Those are reflector ovens.
28:43 - 28:48
But, selfless plug for the boys there, but, yeah.
28:48 - 28:51
It's, it like you say, it's it's a lot closer for me.
28:51 - 28:57
It's the probably the closest show that we have, because there's no other ones in Niagara. Yeah. So I'll be there.
28:57 - 28:58
If you're there, we'll hang out.
28:58 - 29:02
I we I'm pretty sure I will be. Cool.
29:02 - 29:05
Cool. Yeah. Let's hang out. Yes. It's a date.
29:05 - 29:06
I'd have to maybe tailgate.
29:07 - 29:08
I've tailgated in the winter.
29:08 - 29:10
I might get talking to that too.
29:11 - 29:12
We'll have to see what happens.
29:13 - 29:14
For sure.
29:14 - 29:20
It's still it's still a ways away, but I'm, it's I'm I'm already excited about the shows.
29:20 - 29:23
Like, that's that's my that's the pinnacle of my year.
29:23 - 29:28
I like tripping and stuff, but, you know, in the middle of the dead of the winter, it's I'm
29:28 - 29:31
I'm good with going and hanging out with all the YouTubers and stuff.
29:31 - 29:32
Yeah. Well, you know what?
29:32 - 29:38
It's a show, that that that's that would be just before the Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show.
29:38 - 29:38
Yep.
29:39 - 29:41
So that that's, you know, great timing. You know?
29:41 - 29:44
It's that that season where everybody's starting to hey, man.
29:44 - 29:48
They're getting that itch again to get back out because their canoes are covered in snow or,
29:49 - 29:53
you know, all their gear is collecting dust and spider webs out in the basement. So
29:54 - 29:55
Yep. Yeah. Alright. Cool.
29:55 - 29:57
You should you should get a booth there.
29:57 - 30:01
We should we should actually put together a YouTuber booth there is what we should do.
30:02 - 30:03
Well, that's an interesting idea.
30:04 - 30:10
Yeah. That's I thought about that for the, Toronto Outdoor Adventure Show if they had space,
30:10 - 30:13
like, available space to to see about getting a spot.
30:13 - 30:18
So you could have, like, YouTube celebrity area there and people come in and meet whoever you own.
30:18 - 30:20
That's always a fun thing to do.
30:20 - 30:22
Absolutely. Mhmm.
30:22 - 30:25
Alright. I Yeah. I think that's it.
30:25 - 30:26
I think we're done, man.
30:27 - 30:31
Wow, man. Don't say we're done.
30:31 - 30:32
Now I think It's not the end.
30:33 - 30:34
It's not it's not the end.
30:34 - 30:37
I think we're I think we're finished with this episode. How's that?
30:38 - 30:41
There you go. Okay. Okay. Well, hey.
30:41 - 30:42
You have you have the great
30:42 - 30:44
that holds the outdoor adventure community together, Dennis.
30:44 - 30:50
So we're looking forward to whatever canoe hound outdoor adventure show looks like this year. Yep.
30:50 - 30:51
Well, thanks, Pamela. But you know what?
30:51 - 30:54
We're kind of all the glue. You know what?
30:54 - 31:00
You you have listeners, guys from Paddling Adventures, they have liver livers. They have listeners.
31:01 - 31:04
See, that that that was a Sean Rollie right there. Right? There you go.
31:04 - 31:11

31:15 - 31:20

guys are right up there on the, on on the list.
31:29 - 31:36
