00:00 - 00:04
Hello and good day, eh? Welcome to the Super Good Camping podcast. My name is Pamela.

00:04 - 00:04
I'm Tim.

00:04 - 00:06
And we are from SuperGoodCamping.com.

00:06 - 00:11
We are because we're on a mission to inspire other people to get outside and enjoy camping adventures

00:11 - 00:12
such as we have as a family.

00:12 - 00:18
Today, we're coming up on the holiday season and everyone's trying to scramble for ideas for

00:18 - 00:19
what to get their favorite camper.

00:20 - 00:22
So, we thought we'd help you out.

00:22 - 00:28
We have a list of a few things and, also we'll just kinda run through them.

00:28 - 00:33
So one of the things the first thing on the list was, it's water purifier, but it's kind of a cool water purifier.

00:33 - 00:39
So it's called a GRAYL, g r a y l, g o press, t I for titanium purifier.

00:39 - 00:44
So it's it's a titanium kind of canister that you can use to cook with.

00:44 - 00:45
So it doubles as a cook pot.

00:45 - 00:46
You can drink out of it.

00:46 - 00:49
It's gotta handle a lot like a mug that you could drink out of.

00:49 - 00:53
You can it's it's a water purifier, so you put the water in.

00:53 - 00:59
It has like a press, almost like a coffee press, that you can press and it get removes almost

00:59 - 01:06
all viruses, 99.9% of viruses, 99.9% of bacteria, and 99.9% of parasites, but it also removes

01:07 - 01:08
some of the forever chemicals.

01:08 - 01:13
So PFAs, and VOCs, and pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals.

01:13 - 01:16
So really cool that it is able to remove some of that stuff.

01:16 - 01:23
Filtration time is 10 seconds per 3 liters or sorry, 3, sorry, 3 liters per minute roughly.

01:23 - 01:26
And it's, durable because of the titanium.

01:26 - 01:29
And so it you can drop it from 16 onto concrete and it won't break.

01:30 - 01:37
And, pros are that it's fairly compact and it doubles does double duty as a pot and also as, water filtration.

01:38 - 01:39
The downside is it's expensive.

01:39 - 01:42
And as far as we know, it's not yet available in Canada.

01:42 - 01:47
So I found it on the American version of the website of where you order stuff from.

01:47 - 01:49
I'd rather not say because I'm not a fan.

01:49 - 01:55
But otherwise, it's a must have for backcountry campers hikers because it's good and durable,

01:55 - 01:59
but the downside is it's expensive, and we can't get it here in Canada yet.

01:59 - 02:02
Yeah. But it's a GRAYL GEOPress TI Purifier.

02:02 - 02:05
You can Google that and figure out where to get it. Just say it. Yeah.

02:05 - 02:06
Just don't order it from the bad people.

02:06 - 02:09
Yeah. There's billionaires don't need to make more money.

02:09 - 02:14
I get that we're in the middle of a here here in Canada, we're in the middle of a a postal strike.

02:14 - 02:17
So shipping can be a bit a bit of a challenge.

02:17 - 02:20
But back to billionaires don't need more money. They don't.

02:20 - 02:25
So, Pamela did the research on all of this, for the for the just so you know.

02:25 - 02:29
The next one up is a Jetboil Genesis Basecamp system. Oh, cool.

02:29 - 02:34
It's an ultra compact 2 burner system designed for outdoor cooking with ceramic coated nonstick

02:34 - 02:36
fry pan and a 5 liter pot.

02:36 - 02:40
Includes a windscreen and, oh, you can hook up propane tanks. That's cool.

02:40 - 02:44
Pros, high powered, so 10,000 BTUs is is pretty good per burner.

02:44 - 02:48
It's efficient and folds into a small carrying case. Cons, it's heavy.

02:48 - 02:53
So this feels more like a front country camp or if you're doing maybe crown land and plunking

02:54 - 02:57
down for, you know, 2 weeks or something like that. It weighs £9.

02:58 - 03:05
That's about 4 kilograms, 3 3 quarters kilograms, something like that, and requires propane canisters.

03:05 - 03:08
Use and indulgence for car camping or group outings. There you go.

03:08 - 03:11
Not suitable for backcountry due to the weight.

03:11 - 03:15
And next is up is one of the things that we've talked about in previous episodes around, having

03:15 - 03:17
some kind of satellite communication system.

03:18 - 03:22
So Garmin inReach, and I think that's one of the ones that we actually mentioned in the previous episode about that. Yep.

03:23 - 03:26
So Garmin inReach Mini 2 GPS Messenger.

03:26 - 03:33
It's a lightweight GPS device, has two way satellite messaging, SOS capability and location sharing.

03:34 - 03:38
So it's a really important bite of piece of safety info, safety equipment for you to have if

03:38 - 03:44
you are backcountry and or extended in the backcountry hiking trips.

03:44 - 03:50
It's compact, 3 and a half ounces, long battery life up to 30 days, and it's reliable in remote areas.

03:50 - 03:53
You do need to have a subscription service for it.

03:53 - 03:57
But, you know, what's that worth in terms of saving your life?

03:57 - 04:00
So it's it's all checks and balances.

04:00 - 04:05
And it's a has a small screen, so it limits your ability to navigate a little bit.

04:05 - 04:10
But, anyways, it's a must have for safety for solo or extended backcountry adventures.

04:10 - 04:18
Yeah. And, Darren, our ride paddle ride paddle repeat, our most recent, guest episode, he mentioned

04:18 - 04:22
that when they were doing their their super cool trip off into the Yukon, that's what they used

04:22 - 04:28
to communicate with the, with the Outfitter, you know, timing for planes and and that sort of jazz.

04:28 - 04:30
So worked out well for him.

04:30 - 04:37
I everybody by now knows I'm a big ZOLLO fan because that's what we use and why we've got the the system down, Pat.

04:37 - 04:40
You do have to drag a phone or you don't.

04:40 - 04:45
If you wanna communicate more than the prepackaged message that's in there that says, I'm okay.

04:45 - 04:51
This is my location, you have to drag a phone around with you to, to use as your texting bit,

04:51 - 04:53
as your keyboard for for lack of a better term. Alright.

04:54 - 04:56
So next up is the Helinox chair 0.

04:57 - 05:05
Description is a an ultralight camping chair weighing just over a pound with durable materials supporting up to £265. That's pretty impressive.

05:06 - 05:11
Pros, compact, easy setup, and portable, provides a surprising level of comfort for its size,

05:11 - 05:16
which anybody I've heard talk about their Helinox chairs, they they all love them.

05:16 - 05:19
Cons, this is why I don't own them.

05:19 - 05:22
Expensive for its category and a minimal back support.

05:22 - 05:23
We have the cheap knockoffers.

05:24 - 05:28
We we have the we have, yeah, we have the 40 or $50 whatever made in China ones that they they

05:28 - 05:32
do the job for me for the amount of use that I put into them.

05:32 - 05:33
And, yeah, they're not pushing $200.

05:34 - 05:39
The it's a lux luxury indulgence, it is, for backcountry camping offering comfort without significant bulk.

05:39 - 05:45
We bought I bought ours entirely because we were doing a French river trip, which is a lot of

05:45 - 05:49
there aren't a lot of logs and rocks and stuff.

05:49 - 05:53
There's there's lots of granite, flat granite, or rounded granite, but there's nowhere really to sit.

05:53 - 05:59
I knew we were gonna be I knew we were gonna have some some seeding issues, and I'm I'm not spring chicken anymore.

05:59 - 06:05
So it felt like getting one, and I it was for the 40 or $50 each. It totally worth it. Absolutely.

06:06 - 06:08
I can't believe I never did it before.

06:09 - 06:14
Next up is more for car camping, the beach, tailgate parties, picnics, or something like that.

06:14 - 06:16
Not really a backcountry thing.

06:16 - 06:20
But it's Everdure by Heston Blumenthal cube.

06:20 - 06:22
So it's it's really cool looking.

06:22 - 06:24
It's it's this this cube kinda thing.

06:24 - 06:25
Also, it's a little bit like a cooler.

06:26 - 06:27
So it's this cube thing.

06:27 - 06:32
It's got a, an inside is a porcelain, grill so you can grill food.

06:32 - 06:37
So and I looking at it, it looks like it holds a couple of really good sized steaks or it might

06:37 - 06:40
hold 6 or 7 drumsticks if you're doing chicken.

06:41 - 06:44
But so it's this portable grill, looks really nice.

06:44 - 06:49
Got a couple of handles on it so that you can move it around and you use charcoal in it to cook your food.

06:49 - 06:55
It's got a chrome grill over top of it and then it's got this food storage tray that fits on

06:55 - 07:00
top of that and then it's got a bamboo cutting board that fits on top of that and the whole thing kinda clamps together.

07:00 - 07:03
So it's relatively easily portable, but it is heavy.

07:03 - 07:07
So it's not something a £16, not that you're gonna take it into the back country with you.

07:07 - 07:11
But as durable, compact for a grill, and easy to transport.

07:11 - 07:17
And it's a bit of a luxury thing as well, again, for camping the beach, tailgate parties, or picnics, but not backcountry.

07:17 - 07:21
Oh, yeah. And big bulky bags of charcoals. Yeah. No.

07:21 - 07:23
You're not logging out in the backcountry either. Weatherproof journal.

07:24 - 07:25
I have a Christmas list.

07:25 - 07:26
This is probably on it.

07:26 - 07:33
Durable waterproof notebook for writing in any weather condition, compatible with pencils or all weather pens.

07:33 - 07:34
I didn't know that was a thing.

07:34 - 07:38
Through rain, sweat, mud, and time, your notes will survive.

07:38 - 07:43
Riley outside posted on Instagram the other day about her adventure notes. Go check that out.

07:44 - 07:47
Pros, lightweight, compact, reliable, in harsh conditions.

07:48 - 07:51
Cons, adds a small amount of weight, limited pages.

07:51 - 07:53
Limited pages might be a thing.

07:53 - 07:57
I don't know that it it weighs enough to be really sweating unless you're unless you're ultralight,

07:57 - 07:59
like, hiking sort of deal.

08:00 - 08:03
Useful for documenting trips in challenging situations.

08:03 - 08:09
We have had that where we had rain for, like, 3 days, and I just stopped making notes about anything.

08:09 - 08:12
One for making notes if you're gonna go back to the same area again.

08:12 - 08:17
Just, oh, the portage were a little hard to find for this particular spot or, it was a bit more

08:17 - 08:18
uphill than expected, something like that.

08:18 - 08:22
Whatever you're wanting to remember about that trip for Southern Palm trips. Yep.

08:22 - 08:24
Or just cool stories to tell with your kids.

08:25 - 08:27
They're gonna go, yeah. You're lying.

08:28 - 08:33
Yeah. And the last on our list was the NEMO Moonlight Elite reclining chair.

08:33 - 08:40
So this is similar to the Helinox one, also very expensive, but this is like the La Z Boy for the backcountry.

08:40 - 08:43
So you can recline in your, in your camping chair.

08:43 - 08:48
So it's lightweight, portable reclining, durable materials, and has the carrying case with it.

08:48 - 08:54
Lightweight in terms of it's £1.1, it's compact and comfortable for relaxing after a long day.

08:55 - 09:00
It is pricey and it because similar to the Helinox and the ones the knock off ones that we have,

09:00 - 09:02
you're very low to the ground in it.

09:02 - 09:07
So if if getting up and down from that very low position is a challenge, you might have trouble

09:07 - 09:10
with this one and also the Helinox one and also our cheap knock off ones.

09:10 - 09:15
But, anyway, it's a luxury indulgence for people that really prioritize comfort while they're camping.

09:15 - 09:22
Yeah. I I would say that backcountry chairs do again, part of part of saving the weight is short legs on them.

09:22 - 09:27
Not so hard to get down into, but, yeah, they they can be a challenge to get up and out if I

09:27 - 09:29
I swear to that one for sure. Right.

09:29 - 09:35
So so there and there's also and, again, general you you can do cheap ones, but, generally,

09:35 - 09:38
they're a good one is fairly expensive.

09:38 - 09:45
But buy your Backcountry Buddy a a dehydrator or seal a meal, but I think that that's actually a brand name.

09:45 - 09:50
There are different different versions of it because then they can make their own meals way

09:50 - 09:53
cheaper than buying the the premade stuff. And then

09:53 - 09:54
Reduces food waste.

09:54 - 09:59
Reduces food waste. Theoretically, you're not gonna have as much packaging.

09:59 - 10:02
When they when they are done dehydrating, I gotta bag it up.

10:02 - 10:10
Now we we do because we have a freezer, I I sometimes put stuff in a Ziploc bag and use a straw

10:10 - 10:14
to suck as much of the air out as I possibly can and then zip it that last little bit because

10:14 - 10:19
I know it's to package it up in the tiny little bits that we're gonna use for each meal will

10:19 - 10:21
make me sad for all the extra plastic that we're using.

10:21 - 10:27
So I put it into 1 ziplock bag that I can reseal, like freeze for 6 months until we go on our trip.

10:27 - 10:32
And then and then when we take another trip, take out enough for today, reseal it, it'll keep

10:32 - 10:35
it for that week or 8 days or or 10 days or whatever that we're out there.

10:35 - 10:40
So you can do that, but but being able to to totally vacuum pack your stuff and stick it on

10:40 - 10:45
a shelf, if you don't have the luxury of of a big chest freezer, then that's a good thing, you

10:45 - 10:49
know, because it'll it'll it'll last anywhere from depending on what it is and how well you

10:49 - 10:54
did it, you know, you could go from, say, 4 to 6 months up to I think think it's a year and

10:54 - 10:56
a half is sort of a threshold.

10:56 - 11:02
I know that we've had stuff that was in the freezer, and we've used it 3 years later and had no problems. So just saying.

11:02 - 11:03
That's a it's a good thing to have.

11:03 - 11:05
You're pushing the limits a little bit.

11:05 - 11:06
Well, I tend to be like that.

11:07 - 11:08
And and we just just wanna throw it out there.

11:08 - 11:12
I would say shameless self plug, but it's it's kinda not.

11:13 - 11:19
If you're if you're listening in the car, you go go when you get home, go go check out our YouTube

11:19 - 11:21
channel because we'll have this up as a video.

11:21 - 11:25
I'm showing you our very, very cool merch.

11:25 - 11:31
We have a we have super good, camping merch. We have shirts.

11:31 - 11:33
Man, I think there's, like, 6 different shirts.

11:33 - 11:36
SK Group in, in Sault Ste.

11:36 - 11:45
Marie, so Canadian company, did a fabulous job of designing and printing, a whole WAC, a very

11:45 - 11:49
cool very cool shirts for us with a bunch of different designs.

11:49 - 11:54
We get out there is on the back of most of them, but sometimes it has our website.

11:54 - 11:55
You know, they're just they're cool looking things.

11:55 - 12:01
You can I don't own them all yet, so there's there's maybe some Christmas present thoughts for me?

12:01 - 12:04
We've got a couple of different ball caps as well.

12:04 - 12:07
Yeah. So you know someone who wears baseball caps or t shirts and they're looking for something

12:07 - 12:12
new, especially if they're outdoors, then, yeah, these are they're stylish.

12:12 - 12:18
They're they're our own original photography or Tim's own original photography on them. So they're unique.

12:18 - 12:20
That's not something that they're gonna have already.

12:20 - 12:24
Yeah. And, you know, it's I we make diddly squat off of them.

12:24 - 12:30
The the folks I I hope the folks at SK Group make, make make some money off of it because they

12:30 - 12:32
put in a lot of work to design it.

12:32 - 12:33
It would make me sad if they didn't.

12:34 - 12:39
At some point, we'll probably just just do you know, we we can pick a charity and have your,

12:39 - 12:47
you know, dollar 5¢ from each shirt or whatever go to to to a charity for for a quarter, for a month, for whatever.

12:47 - 12:49
You know, we'll probably we'll probably do that.

12:49 - 12:53
If we actually see some interest in in our, in our merch, then yeah.

12:54 - 12:55
So how to get it?

12:56 - 13:01
The links will be in the show notes, but, you can also go to our website anytime, which is supergoodcamping.com,

13:02 - 13:05
and you will see a link at the top called shop.

13:05 - 13:10
So if you click the shop link, you will see there's a picture of several of the different items

13:10 - 13:13
that they have, and there's a link directly to the SK Group

13:13 - 13:14
Store. Yep.

13:14 - 13:16
Store. So you can go there and purchase.

13:16 - 13:17
And if you don't need

13:17 - 13:17
merchandise, but you would still like to support

13:17 - 13:19
your favorite podcast, there's also a link there to buy us a merchandise, but you would still

13:19 - 13:23
like to support your favorite podcast, there's also a link there to buy us a coffee. Tim likes coffee.

13:23 - 13:25
I'm not such a coffee person.

13:25 - 13:27
I like coffee. It's a bad thing if I don't have coffee in

13:27 - 13:30
the morning. Yes. Definitely. That's it for us for today.

13:30 - 13:32
Thank you so much for listening.

13:32 - 13:38
We hope you have the happiest of holidays, and maybe some of the our suggestions will make somebody else's holiday even happier.

13:39 - 13:43

14:01 - 14:02
Just wanna throw it out there.

14:02 - 14:06
So we have a we have a couple of very cool guest episodes coming up.

14:06 - 14:10
We're in the works to, hopefully, just before the end of the year, set up a livestream.

14:10 - 14:12
So keep your eyes peeled for that.

14:12 - 14:14
That'll be that'll be interesting.

14:14 - 14:16
I think it'll be fun, fun, fun. It might

14:16 - 14:18
be comical, if not in a good way.

14:18 - 14:22
Yeah. In a in a technically, oh my what the oh, what did I push?

14:22 - 14:23
That's this work.

14:23 - 14:25
But but keep your eyes peeled for that.

14:26 - 14:27
Alright. Are we done now?

14:27 - 14:27
Yeah. We're done now.

14:27 - 14:30
Alright. Okay. We'll talk to you again soon. Bye.

14:30 - 14:30
Bye.
